Adaptation of the “Defeating meningitis by 2030” global road map

Support to WHO Southeast Asia Region in finalizing the Regional Implementation Framework

Meningitis is a major public health issue worldwide, causing up to 2.5 million yearly cases, killing 250 000 people annually, and leaving one in five affected individuals with long-term devastating sequelae. In 2017, following a call for action of representatives from governments, global health organizations, public health bodies, academia, the private sector and civil society towards defeating meningitis, WHO took the leadership in developing a global road map that sets forth a vision and strategy to defeat meningitis by 2030. In November 2020, the 73rd World Health Assembly approved the global road map to defeat meningitis by 2030 (resolution WHA73.9). For relevant implementation and as for the other WHO Regions, the global road map needs to be adapted in the SEA Region considering the specificities of the Region and its Member States. The SEA Regional Implementation Framework (RIF) includes regional meningitis disease burden, response and progress, context of development of the RIF, visions and goals, the 5 pillars of the Framework, key regional challenges and mitigation plans, wider benefit and complementarities, roles and responsibilities as well as monitoring and evaluation framework. It also describes a landscape analysis leading to the identification of four priority Member States where meningitis health needs and expected impact of the RIF are greatest, and expected to drive success by demonstrating feasibility and impact of the roadmap.
