Technical assistance for the development of the national strategy for the vaccination across the life course
Taking a life-course approach to immunization, rather than restricting it to childhood, offers a valuable opportunity to improve population health, support health system sustainability, and promote economic prosperity. Policies that support immunization across the life course have the potential to, among other things, protect against adolescent and adult diseases, promote healthy ageing, increase essential vaccine coverage and reduce Zero Dose and Under Immunized Children, and benefit individual and population health by reducing Vaccine Preventable Diseases burden.
Despite these benefits, and support at the global level, most countries have not yet implemented a life-course approach to immunization. In line with the Immunization Agenda 2030, one of the Objectives of the Liberia National Immunization Strategy (NIS) 2023-2027 is to align immunization and health system policies and guidelines throughout the life course and to introduce vaccines throughout the life course to save lives.
EpiLinks is supporting Liberia’s Expanded Program of Immunization (EPI) with the development of the Life Course Strategy that outlines the three main vaccination strategies that can be implemented to reach vaccine beneficiaries in the country: the second Year of Life (2YL) vaccination platform, the adolescent vaccination strategy, and the adult vaccination strategy.
The Life Course approach to vaccination will provide opportunities for integrating immunization services with other health programs, expanding or developing new service delivery platforms.
